After experiencing such sadness and horror at Auschwitz-Birkenau, I didn’t think I could be cheerful again, but once again the Polish people came to my rescue, with smiles and dancing and laughter. I made wonderful friends in short order. Within a day they were showing me around, telling me about their studies, asking me about myself, and having a wonderful time. Every place we went was historic and beautiful and welcoming. Coming from Maine, I know a tourist trap when I see one, but finding other students to spend time with was the key. They know the places to go that are off the beaten track, as it were. We really benefited from the hard work our teachers have done to build relationships and lay the groundwork for our trip. These busy grad students and teachers have taken the time to ensure we have an unforgettable experience. I hope to return the favor someday!
