Today we visited a wildlife research station in the Panstwowe forest. The station was Nadlesnictwo Brodnica. We talked about how they regulated animals to keep them out of farmers’ fields. At this station, they hunt the animals, and they do research projects that attempt to keep the animals out of fields and in the forest. We went to a field that was surrounded by forest on all four sides. They had a hot wire set up and a netting around the field with the hot wire. The animals hit the netting and the hot wire shocks them. This makes them not want to cross the netting to get in the field, so it reduces the amount of animals in the field. They have some small fields in the forest that are planted with cereals, like rye, to keep animals from leaving the forest for food, and they had feeding station where they feed during the winter. After we went and looked at all these techniques use to keep animals out of fields, they fed us soup and sausage. The trip was informing and fun. It is always nice to get out of the class room and go out and see the practical side of things.
