Soil Sampling

While the other students took a field trip, I went to a research field with two of the Polish professors. We spent the morning collecting surface soil samples. The weather was perfect and I learned a lot about Polish soil and agricultural research, including some Polish words, a little about the European classification of soils, sampling methods, etc. Just being in the soil was the best thing. Later we returned to the same field and dug a 1.5-m test pit, and characterized it. This soil had a lot of similarities to soils I’ve seen in Maine.
I really can’t believe the opportunities I have had on this trip. Being able to initiate a research project in Poland wasn’t just the icing on the cake, it’s a whole extra cake.DSC00592
